Privacy policy
Who we are
Hinge is made by [your legal or business name], [city, country]. Questions about this policy or your data: hello@tryhinge.com.
The short version
- The website has no accounts, no analytics and no advertising or tracking scripts.
- Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
- Two cookies link the browser you bought in to your purchase so you can download Hinge. That is all they do.
- The Hinge app makes no network requests and never saves or uploads your screen.
What the website collects
Cookies. When you start checkout, the site sets two cookies: hinge_browser, a random identifier, and hinge_purchase, the identifier of your Stripe checkout session. Both are HttpOnly, first-party, and kept for one year. They are used only to confirm that the browser asking for the download is the one that paid. A one-way hash of the random identifier is stored with your checkout session at Stripe so we can make that check. No cookie is set until you start checkout, and the interactive demo uses none.
Server logs. Our hosting provider records ordinary request logs, such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. We use them only to operate the site and diagnose problems.
Nothing else. Fonts and icons are served from this domain. There are no third-party analytics, pixels, embedded videos from other services, or social buttons.
Payments
Checkout happens on a page hosted by Stripe. Stripe collects the details needed to take the payment, such as your card number, name, email address and billing country, under Stripe’s privacy policy. We receive confirmation that the payment succeeded, the amount, the currency, the email address you gave Stripe, and the last four digits of the card. We keep this purchase record in Stripe for as long as Stripe retains it, and use it to deliver your download, handle refunds and support, and meet accounting and tax obligations.
Downloads
Each time you download Hinge, the site checks your purchase with Stripe. Nothing is stored about the download itself beyond the server logs above. The download is delivered only to the browser that paid, so keep its cookies if you want to download again. If you lose access, contact us with your Stripe receipt and we will help.
What the Hinge app does on your Mac
With your permission and the effect turned on, Hinge uses macOS Screen Recording (ScreenCaptureKit) to get frames of your built-in display for the perspective and blur effect. Frames can contain whatever is on your screen. They are processed in memory and on the GPU only: Hinge does not save screenshots or recordings, does not upload frames, and has no analytics, account, telemetry or automatic update service. It makes no network requests at all.
Hinge also reads the built-in lid-angle sensor. It does not use the camera, microphone, audio capture, Accessibility or Input Monitoring. You can pause the effect from the menu bar, quit the app, or withdraw Screen Recording permission in System Settings at any time. Settings are stored in your macOS user preferences. Diagnostic messages go to the macOS logging system and may include sensor angles, display sizes and error text, but not screen images.
Retention
- Cookies: one year, or until you clear them.
- Purchase records: kept in Stripe as long as required for support, refunds, disputes and tax records.
- Server logs: kept by the hosting provider for a limited period, typically days to a few weeks.
Your rights
You can ask us what purchase information we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted where we are not required to keep it, or object to how it is used. Email hello@tryhinge.com. If you are in the EU, UK, Australia or another place with privacy laws, you also have the right to complain to your local privacy regulator. The site and app are not directed at children under 16.
Changes
If we ever add a feature that collects more than described here, this page will be updated first and the date above will change. The app will not start collecting data through an update without a new description.
